David F. Swensen, chief investment officer of Yale University gave a speech at the 60th annual conference of the Chartered Financial Analysts Institute. Swensen achieved fame by managing Yale's endowment and producing a 15.4 percent-a-year return from 1985 on.
Swensen said that he has two investment principles:
• If someone plans to stay invested a long time, he or she should prefer stocks to bonds, and
• That person should own a diversified portfolio.
