Korea Opening to Hedge Funds
Filed in archive Hedgetalk on November 22, 2007
The Asian hedge fund market has grown around 40 percent annually during the last ten years. It is estimated to be $200 billion as of the end of last year, and hedge funds investing in Korea are estimated at $24 billion.
According to the Korea Times, the Korean government will allow the establishment of hedge funds in 2009 to help upgrade the country's financial industry and boost its growth potential. It had initially planned to phase out regulations on private equity funds (PEFs) toward full admission of hedge funds in the domestic Financial market by 2012.
One fund of funds has already been launched by Hana Daetoo Securities, the HFG Korea Fund, which will invest in less volatile hedge funds investing in Korea.
